How to make the best terrarium with plants? Your eternal garden.

This will be a quick guide on how to assemble a beautiful eternal garden. A closed ecosystem that is capable of thriving without the need for regular watering. This is possible because it creates a perfect microclimate inside for the plants' development.

To make a terrarium with plants, you will need the following components:

A glass jar. We recommend a tall one, between 25 and 35 cm in height.

Volcanic gravel. (Approximately 1 kg)

Activated charcoal. (70-100 g)

A fine mesh as a filter.

Premium universal substrate.

Natural moss.

A branch or root. We use olive roots treated with Carnauba vegetable wax oil.

Fishing line as thin as possible.

BOREEN air plants.

A cover for the terrarium. Preferably with LED light specifically for plant growth.

Let's go!

Step 1. Clean the jar with soap and water. I won't explain how to do it here. Just do it carefully so that it doesn't break, as even though our terrariums are of the highest quality, they are large glass pieces and a blow could damage them.

Step 2. Place the volcanic gravel at the bottom of the terrarium. Use your hand to prevent the stones from falling forcefully onto the bottom. Distribute them evenly across the entire base. They should be approximately 2 centimeters high. Keep in mind that when we water the terrarium, the water will collect at the bottom, and the porous volcanic rocks will act as a natural filter, preventing the substrate from coming into direct contact with the water.

Step 3. We will evenly distribute 1/3 of the activated charcoal sachet on top of the volcanic rock. Activated charcoal is the natural component responsible for keeping the ecosystem healthy and preventing the growth of fungi or bacteria.

Step 4. We will place the fine mesh to prevent the substrate from seeping into the bottom of the terrarium. This mesh is slightly larger than the diameter of the terrarium. In the next step, I will explain why.

Step 5. We will mix the remaining activated charcoal content with the substrate in a container, and then distribute it on top of the mesh. This will seal it and prevent the soil from filtering down. Since the mesh is slightly elevated, it will prevent eggs from getting trapped between the substrate and the volcanic rock. We will place approximately 1-2 cm of substrate. It is not necessary to add more since moss barely needs soil to survive.

Step 6. We will place the natural moss. It doesn't matter if you have to separate different sections of the moss. Since these are non-vascular plants, you can separate them without fear of damaging them. Arrange them like a puzzle in whichever way you prefer.

Step 7. Water the entire setup with filtered water, rainwater, or weakly mineralized bottled water. Add water gradually until you see that there is approximately one finger's width of water at the bottom.

Step 8. Insert the olive root, along with its air plants, inside the terrarium and attach the end of the fishing line to the LED light lid.

And there you have it! You have created a garden in a bowl.

If your terrarium doesn't have a lid, you can make one with cork or a small glass plate that fits the diameter of the terrarium opening. Tie the fishing line to the olive root. You can also use a hot glue gun to make the job easier. You can find one at any hardware store, and they are very affordable. Once you have the fishing line secured to the root, you can attach the other end to the terrarium lid. This way, once it's in place, the root with the air plants will be suspended inside the eternal garden.
